Tennis Lessons and Strategy – How to Increase Your Stamina During Matches

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

If you recently watched John Isner and Nicholas Mahut battle through their epic long match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(9-7), 7-6(7-3), 70-68 you know that tennis is sport which requires a tremendous amount of energy and stamina.

While their match is a classic example of a professional level of stamina and years and years of training, what tennis lessons and strategies can junior players and novice players implement to help boost their physical and mental stamina on the court?

In my last article, I recommended storing energy prior to competition (no heavy hitting the day prior) and suggested truly preparing for a tournament 3-5 days in advance. One aspect included saving your eyes, by not reading or watching movies. Another aspect, which I will focus on, was not watching very high adrenaline action movies the night before? Why?

Most players have a very equal level of concentration and output during a match. If you look at Roger Federer he is typically very calm and shows little emotion on the court. He did not always used to be this way. In the juniors Roger Federer had a reputation for having a temper. In his move from amateur to probably the greatest player of all time one of the greatest changes was the way he conserves energy on the court.

Roger will keep an even keel temper and mentality throughout most of his match. However, in a tough situation where he gets down or wins a big point he will yell or scream “CMON”. Not only does this show his opponent he is into the match and willing to put up a fight, but it also released adrenaline throughout his body.

Understanding how to release adrenaline throughout your body and storing it for difficult points in a match or most importantly tough third set can help you increase your energy and mental output late in a competition.

A couple tips to do this:

1) Conserve your energy prior to a match. Listen to soft music but nothing that will really get your blood pumping prior to competition. In other sports this may work, but in tennis your are engaging in a lengthy match process where THERE IS NOT SHOT CLOCK OR TIMER that you can depend on to end the match. You are entering a state of competition where the end time is not predetermined (biggest difference in preparing for tennis vs. other sports).

2) Keep an even keel mindset and temper during the tennis match. If you are required to pump yourself up to get through a tough first set then do so… but understand the consequences later in the match.

3) Learn how your body responds to yelling or fist pumps during tennis practice and learn what points you should do this on… (i.e. not when you tie… when you take the lead or win the more important points in a match)

Who Will Win the FA Premier League in 2011

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Here are some predictions for the top five places in the premier League and why, in the order they will finish. Each of the teams have made some changes, as they do each season and I assess the impact of the new recruits and the players who have left the club.

1 – Manchester United
Despite losing out to Chelsea in the last game of the season, Man United, must be favourites once again this season. With the addition of a proven goal-scorer in Javier Hernandez and the Fulham defender Chris Smalling they will win the league this time. Alex Ferguson will be doubly keen to do well, especially as his reign will be ended soon.

Transfer Rumours: Joe Cole, Karim Benzema, Wesley Sneijder, Luis Suarez, Jack Rodwell, James Milner

2 – Manchester City
Once again City are expected to do well. They missed out on champions league football in almost the final game, but have added some experienced quality players who know how to win. What Mancini must do this season is to mould the new and old players into a winning unit, and give them belief. The recent aquisition of David Silva will give them the needed fire power up front and make them a very close bet.

Transfer Rumours: Fernando Torres, Edin Dzeko, James Milner, Joe Cole, Zlatan Ibrahimovic

3 – Chelsea
Carlo Ancelotti proved to be a good manager, winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup in his first season, though with the arrival of Yossi Benayoun from Liverpool, replacing the fans favourite Joe Cole, and the departures of Ballack and Beletti, he will struggle to get the same level from this team. Expect Junior players to be brought into the squad this season. Chelsea also seem very keen on Fernando Torres, which would be an interesting purchase, as he has struggled in this league to produce his best form, and only performs well in odd games.

Transfer Rumours: Fernando Torres, Neven Subotic, Kaka, Franck Ribery, Sergio Aguero, James Milner

4 – Arsenal
Arsenal once again had an indifferent season by their standards, having done well against the weaker teams but struggling against the big boys. They have brought in a couple of French players, one being a centre back to replace William Gallas and Sol Campbell. Expect Arsenal to be in the hunt come the end of the season, Arsene Wenger knows what it takes to get them playing despite the recent unrest, they will be challenging once again. Wenger is a master of bringing youth into the team and expect the same this season.

Transfer Rumours: Joe Hart, Hugo Rodellego, Joe Cole, Felipe Melo de Carvalho, Mark Schwarzer, Gary Cahill

5 – Tottenham
Spurs did remarkably well to make the final Champions League place, being the surprise package in the league. This term though teams will know exactly what to expect from them and their path to the top seats in the league will be that much harder this season. Harry Redknapp has a reputation of being a player wheeler dealer, but so far in this transfer window there has been no activity, though the rumours that Joe Cole will join on a free transfer still persist.

Transfer Rumours: Steven Peinaar, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Joe Cole, Connor Wickham, Craig Bellamy, Diego Forlan

Other teams who might break into the top for are Everton, Aston Villa and Liverpool. I really expect Manchester City to push the other top teams this season with Mancini having a season under his belt. It also pleases me to see them doing well making the Premier League that bit more competitive.

Who Will Be Relegated From the FA Premier League in 2011?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I predict the following teams will finish in this order in the league. What do you think?

18 – West Brom

Under Roberto Di Matteo West Brom have bounced back to the premier league in style, missing out from winning the championship by Newcastle. Despite bolstering their squad with the Spanish Centre back Pablo Ibanez from Athletico Madrid and the Romania defender Gabriel Tamas from Auxerre, expect West Brom to struggle this season. They will have some notable scalps this season but consistency will be an issue.

Transfer rumours: Callum Davenport, Phil Bardsley, Jimmy Bullard

19 – Wolves

Despite managing to stay up last season Wolves will find life hard in the league this term. It’s a measure of a newly promoted team if they can maintain their status, and Wolves did just that, though they have to sign Chelsea loanee Michael Mancienne if they are to stand a chance. They have brought in Hull’s talisman from last season, Hunt, and a premier league goal-scorer in Burnley’s Steve Fletcher, but even with these players their strength in depth will still be lacking for the top flight. Wolves can ill afford losing two of their stars, Ebanks-blake and Kevin Doyle, who are both rumoured for either Villa or Blackpool.

Transfer rumours: Robbie Keane, Tommy Smith, Andre Bikey

20 – Blackpool

So far Ian Holloway has not made any signings, though that will surely change. Despite this lack of activity Blackpool, who made it through the play-offs last season will be the Premier League whipping boys. Holloway will give them a never say die attitude and for some teams they will be hard to beat, but expect them to be propping up the table come the end of the season.

Transfer rumours: Frederic Piquionne, Aruna Dindane, Robert Lewandowski

Other teams who will need to be looking down the league closely will be Sunderland, Newcastle and Wigan.c Without Roy Hodgson Fulham will have to be careful they don’t drop down also.

How Do I Find the Right Golf Swing Training Aid For Me?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

It seems just about everything in our high tech world has a technical gadget or gizmo that can improve it or make it more effective. The same is true for the golfers aids that are available now also. Nev had joined a local men’s comp and was needing to brush up on his golf swing skills. He was a little overwhelmed with what is available on the market and was looking to find somewhere where he could get the right advice. Nev asked his comp buddies “How do I find the right golf swing training aid for me?”

• The first thing that Nev did was speak to his friends at his local golf club pro shop. They had some golf swing training aid products in stock. They only kept a limited amount of the training aids in stock as they are quickly upgraded and can sit on their shelves for too long if they are not sold. The manager offered the advice that Nev talk to fellow players and get their opinions on what they are using and as to whether they would recommend he purchase it. His pro shop also suggested that Nev check out the local sporting goods store and see what sort of range they stocked.

• The next thing Nev did was go and speak to his local sporting goods store customer assistant. There was a huge range of products that ranged in options just as much as they ranged in price. It seemed there was really a golf swing training aid in just about every price bracket, and it became even more confusing as to what made the expensive ones different and worth the spend when compared with the cheaper options that were also available.

• Finally Nev went to the discount sporting goods store to seed if he could bag a bargain there. whilst there were some definite price differences he could take advantage of, he still want entirely sure what it was that he should be looking for. Nev needed to consider that even though the products are heavily discounted, doesn’t mean that they are bargains as such. It could be that they are discounted so much because they simply do not work.
