Cricket Equipment

Cricket EquipmentWhen you are just starting out playing cricket it is not always easy to decide what you need to buy. If you go into a sports store and ask them what you need, you will end up getting a lot of equipment. So it is best to work out what you need before you go shopping. That way you are more likely to get what you need, rather than what the store owner thinks you need.

Below, is more or less a comprehensive cricket equipment list, you don’t need everything on this list, as many clubs will lend you equipment especially at junior level:

Cricket whites, cricket bat, ball, helmet, gloves, batting (wicket keeping) inner gloves, wicket keeping gloves, batting pads, wicket keeping pads, box, chest pad, arm guard, inner thigh pad, cricket boots (bowling boots; batting boots), box (groin guard), stumps and bails.

For most games that you play you will need your own set of whites. Cricket whites consist of white cricket trousers and cricket shirt. Make sure that you get a proper pair of cricket trousers and also a good white cricket shirt and jumper as it can get cold if you are standing out on the field for a long time especially if you are playing in England (the start and end of the season are the coldest).

If you can not borrow equipment from your club the other most important items of equipment are a cricket bat and box. A good cricket bat is essential if you intend to score lots of runs and is a very personal piece of equipment, spend some time choosing your bat, ideally you should go to a shop and pick one up beofre you buy so you know how it feels to play with. (Once you know what you want you can often buy bats online cheaper). You need a good box to protect your groin from the ball, as getting hit ‘down below’ is extremely painful (I know from experience), so investing in a good box before you start is a must – you can’t bat without one.

Cricket batting pads and batting gloves are the next most important thing that you need when you are starting to play (often you should be able to borrow them from your team mates or club if you can’t buy them). Cricket pads will protect your legs and if you get a good pair they will make you much more comfortable on the pitch. When you are buying pads, it is also better to go to the store to make sure that you get a pair that fit you and are easy for you to wear and to play in. Even if you see a pair that look good at an online, you would be better to pay a bit more in the store so that you make sure that you get a pair that is right for you. Cricket batting gloves are also important to protect you hands when you are batting, as fingers can be easily broken when hit with a hard cricket ball.

If you are young player it is a good idea to buy a helmet to keep your head safe from any high balls or balls that deflect off your bat towards your face. Regulations now mean that young players under 18 have to wear helmets when batting (or if you’re a wicket keeper if you are standing up). You might be able to borrow a helmet from your team mates or club but if you are serious about your cricket it’s definitely worth investing in one.

Serious cricketers should also invest in a pair of cricket boots. As it is very important to buy these as your feet can suffer if you do not have the right shoes. Having the cricket ball hit your toes when batting is very painful and good pair of cricket boots will provide more protection than a simple pair of trainers.

You do not need a huge amount of gear to play cricket, as often you can borrow gear from your team mates or club, plus if you invest in high quality cricket equipment then it will last you a very long time as well.

Indoor Cricket Nets

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Indoor Cricket Indoor cricket nets are usually suspended off an attached metal rail which is fixed to runners or ball bearings. The metal rails are normally attached to the roof of a gymnasium or sports hall which allows the nets to drop down from anything up to 9m. This height is an advantage to spinners who want to give the ball “flight” when bowling, the height advantage means the ball won’t get stuck in the top net.

Also with the net being on rails fixed to the roof, it allows the nets to be drawn back from their position and tied up to create an open area which would be suitable for other activities.

Indoor nets are commonly white in colour, unlike outdoor nets which are black. This is for safety reasons. Also an indoor net has less division poles, which means there is less chance of a ball ricocheting off a pole, which could cause injury to one of the players.

The length of the net horizontally is normally around 20m long. Usually cricket nets will be found with two to five lanes which enable multiple players to practice either their batting or bowling skills at the same time. Indoor cricket nets also have a separate canvas shield around them. This is because the canvas is much stronger than the traditional mesh netting used for the rest of the net. It needs to be stronger because the area around the batsmen gets the most punishment from the cricket balls hitting the sides repeatedly. The canvas also makes the batsmen more secluded from his/her surroundings so they can concentrate more on their batting rather than what’s going on around them. The canvas section is normally two to four metres high.

Cricket Kits

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

cricket kitsCricket, one of the most popular sports across the world, is a sport played by two teams having eleven players each. Like most sports, cricket cannot be played without the cricket kit and/or accessories. The days when cricketers’ kit only included a bat and ball are long gone. There are a number of accessories included in the cricket kit that among other things include gloves, helmets, pads, clothing, bats, and other protective gear. Depending on the position a player is playing at, he/she makes use of different sports equipment from the cricket kit. For example, wicket keepers wear thinner pads than the batsmen. Also, the gloves they wear are bigger in size and less padded and are designed exclusively for catching the ball.

Essentials of the Cricket Kit
All players irrespective of the area their skills lay carry the following essentials of the cricket kit;
• Cricket ball and bat – The cricket bat and ball are essential and are the first items of a cricket kit. It is impossible to comprehend the idea of either cricket or a cricket kit without a cricket bat and ball.

• Gloves – Earlier cricketers did not wear gloves when playing a match. However, it is unheard of a batsman or a wicket keeper to be playing cricket without their gloves on. The wicketkeeper’s gloves are bigger and have thinner pads. In contrast, the batsmen’s’ gloves are more heavily padded above the fingers and are smaller in size compared to those of the wicket keepers.

• Leg pads – Leg pads are one of the most important accessories for a cricketer and play a vital role in protecting the legs and knees from injuries.

• Helmets – Helmets are another type of protective gear used by batsmen and wicketkeepers. It is now crucial for batsmen and wicket-keepers to wear helmets (by the International Cricket Law). The helmet protects them from a head injury that can be caused by the ball hitting them at a fast speed (in case of fast balls).

• Spiked Shoes – Since cricketers have to play on grass or turf, most of them wear spiked shoes these days. Spiked shoes give them a better foothold and prevent them from slipping on the ground.

• Other Protective Gear – Because cricketers are prone to injuries, it is important that they use appropriate protective gear to prevent or at the most minimize the effects of injuries. This protective gear includes but is not limited to shin guard, thigh pads, chest guards, arm guards and abdomen guards etc.
